In the News

Stone Bridge High School DECA program - The DECA Powder Puff game was scheduled for October 14, 2009 to coincide with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Because staying loyal to the local community is important to Stone Bridge DECA, they chose to select a local breast cancer support organization, Loudoun Breast Health Network, to donate the proceeds of the event. In conjunction with the DECA Powder Puff football game the chapter incorporated a “Pretty in Pink” day into the school’s Homecoming spirit week. On the day of the event the entire school wore pink to show their support for Stone Bridge DECA and their fight against breast cancer. “Fight like a Girl, Beat Breast Cancer” t-shirts and bracelets were printed, pink ribbons and Mardi Gras beads were handed out, and pink baked goods were donated and sold as part of the event.

Stone Bridge DECA was able to make a sizeable donation to the Loudoun Breast Health Network with the funds raised through this event. Money from player registration, event ticket sales, promotional t-shirts and bracelet sales, and bake sale proceeds all contributed to the final donation amount. Overall, the chapter earned $5,265.11 to be donated to the Loudoun Health Breast Network, surpassing our goal of $5,000.00.

The “Fight like a Girl, Beat Breast Cancer” DECA Powder Puff game proved to be the most successful Learn and Earn project in the history of Stone Bridge DECA.

"The LBHN has about 40 people signed up as volunteers and seven women serving on the Board. It got off the ground in 2005... Without any county or state funding, it relies solely on the generosity of donors. But the difference it makes isn’t measured in dollars – it’s measured in the hope it inspires. Or, the lives it may help one day save. That’s priceless." Read the full article in PDF format by clicking here.

Arbonne Fundraiser for LBHN – A "Party With A Purpose" was sponsored by Maribeth Crooks. Area Manager for Arbonne International Swiss Skincare on January 24, 2009, to benefit LBHN. The party was hosted by Misty Paul, D.C., at her Family Chiropractic Office in Leesburg. Maribeth presented a check to Dr. Paul for proceeds from the Arbonne sales to Nancy Ryan and Susan Mills, LBHN Board members. Many thanks to these great ladies who are giving back to their community!

The LBHN also has the help of Kara Kovach, a Girl Scout working toward her Gold Award, the highest scouting award for girls. Kara is giving out journals to all those who want to share their experience with cancer. The teenager said she hopes that women with cancer, or who've had the disease, will be comforted by documenting their stories, which will be a mix of trials, tribulations and victories. Once she has collected the journals, Kara hopes to publish a book of inspiring stories about women who have faced, fought, lived with and, most importantly, beaten cancer in Loudoun County. Those who wish to may remain anonymous. Submissions must be received by February 15, 2010. Contact someone on the steering committee if you are interested in the journal. Let the “C” be for “Cure” and “Compassion”. Let it stand for the “Candles” we light, And a “Chorus” of voices shouting “You Can!” To all who will take up this fight. Read the full poem in PDF format by clicking here.

— Kathy Cawthon, Survivor

"To help educate the public about the disease and its risk factors as well as the importance of early detection, the LBHN promotes rapid diagnosis and treatment and offers programs to provide emotion, spiritual and day-to-day support to those diagnosed with the disease and their families throughout the treatment period and beyond."
